The calculation is based on the paper Making AI Less "Thirsty:" Uncovering and Addressing the Secret Water Footprint of AI Models1 and Dr. Shaolei Ren's article with the Washington Post, the hidden environmental costs of using AI Chatbots2. Dr. Ren also has an informative TED Talk3 explaining why AI consumes so much water.
